In 2019, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Gian Maria Volontè’s passing, we are honoured to organise a retrospective on his work in China, with a series of talks and film screenings on global resistance and human rights. Our desire is to take Volontè’s life and iconic roles as a symbol of the daily struggle against hegemonic power structures, an invitation to choose resistance over revolt.

We invite an international selection of thinkers from our time to present the different films of Volontè and create a transnational dialogue on Cinema, power and resistance.

“I accept or reject a film according to my concept of cinema. And it is not a matter of giving a definition to political cinema, in which I do not believe, because every film, every show, is always political. Being an actor is a question of choice that is primarily at the existential level: either you accept to re-express the conservative structures of society, content to be a robot in the hands of power, or you turn towards the progressive components of this society, to try to establish a revolutionary relationship between art and life.”
